Chapter History

A group of women active in music at Iowa State College met on November 6, 1912 to form a local group to promote interest in music among the women of Iowa State College.

The name "Lambda Mu" (Love of Music) was chosen, their colors were purple and gold, and their flower was to be the purple violet.

The first appearance of the Lambda Mu (ΛM) was on April 8, 1924, at a recital for Sigmund Spaeth, where the women served as the ushers.

The following May, fourteen women initiated, with a successful year following. Their program included a recital, the sponsoring of a tag day to send the band to Drake, dinner with members of Phi Mu Alpha, and affiliation with the Iowa Federation of Music Clubs.

In 1925, Lambda Mu petitioned for membership into Sigma Alpha Iota and was accepted, becoming the Sigma Lambda (ΣΛ) Chapter of SAI.
